What are the uses of silicon carbide


Silicon carbide (sic) is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke) and wood chips as raw materials through high temperature smelting in a resistance furnace. A rare mineral, moissanite, also exists in nature. Among contemporary non-oxide high-tech refractory raw materials such as c, n, b, silicon carbide is a widely used and economical one, which can be called gold steel sand or refractory sand.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is composed of carbon (C) atoms and silicon (Si) atoms, and the density is 3.2g/cm3. Natural silicon carbide is very rare and is mainly synthesized artificially. Its crystal structure has the characteristics of homogeneous polytype, and the most common ones in the semiconductor field are 3C-SiC with cubic sphalerite structure and 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC with hexagonal wurtzite structure.

Silicon carbide basic properties

The hardness of silicon carbide is as high as 9.2-9.3 on Mohs at 20°C, which is one of the hardest substances and can be used to cut rubies;

The thermal conductivity exceeds that of metal copper, which is 3 times that of Si and 8-10 times that of GaAs, and its thermal stability is high, and it is impossible to be melted under normal pressure;

Silicon carbide has the characteristics of wide band gap and breakdown resistance. Its band gap is 3 times that of Si, and the breakdown electric field is 10 times that of Si.


Silicon carbide features: high thermal conductivity, high temperature strength, wear resistance, thermal shock resistance, corrosion resistance and other characteristics. It is an ideal raw material for high temperature equipment such as iron-making blast furnace lining, ceramic kiln furniture, muffle furnace, cement rotary kiln, aluminum refining furnace, zinc distillation furnace and waste incinerator.

Silicon carbide usesage:

One: As an abrasive, it can be used to make abrasives, such as grinding wheels, oil stones, grinding heads, sand tiles, etc.​​

Two: as metallurgical deoxidizer and high temperature resistant material. Silicon carbide has four main application areas, namely: functional ceramics, refractory materials, abrasives and metallurgical raw materials. At present, the crude silicon carbide material can be supplied in large quantities and cannot be regarded as high-tech products, and the application of nano-scale silicon carbide powder with extremely high technical content cannot form economies of scale in a short period of time.​​

Three: High-purity single crystal, which can be used to manufacture semiconductors and silicon carbide fibers.
